  1. Blade Blank: Pre-shaped and pre-sharpened blade.
  2. Handle Scales: Two pieces of wood, micarta, or other material for the handle.
  3. Pins or Mosaic Pins: Metal rods or screws to secure the handle.
  4. Optional Components: Bolsters, liners, or spacers for added design features.
  5. Instructions and Diagram (optional): A blueprint for reference.

Tools You Will Need

Ensure you have the following tools on hand:

  • Clamps: For holding the handle securely during assembly.
  • Drill and Bits: To drill pinholes (if not pre-drilled).
  • Files and Rasps: For shaping the handle.
  • Safety Gear: Safety goggles, gloves, and a dust mask.
  • Workbench or Vice: A stable workspace for assembly.
  • Ruler and Marker: For precise measurements and marking on scales.
  • Epoxy Adhesive: For attaching the handle scales to the blade tang.
  • Sandpaper: Various grits (coarse to fine) for shaping and finishing the handle.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS FOR A KNIFE MAKING:

Step 1: Prepare the Blade Blank

  1. Inspect the Blade: Ensure the blade blank is free of rust or damage. Blade comes oiled, wipe it with a towel.
  2. Mark the Tang: If you plan to drill new holes for pins, mark the locations carefully. But we already have drilled holes so we don’t recommend to drill more holes for a novice knife maker.
  3. Optional Step: Before assembly, sand the blade handle (only) to improve the grip of the handle scales with blade when using epoxy. Rest assured that pins will play a key role to enhance the grip to utmost level.

Step 2: Prepare the Handle Scales

  1. Match the Scales to the Blade Tang: Place the tang between the scales to ensure a proper fit.
  2. Mark Pin Locations: Align the scales with the tang and mark the pinhole locations.
  3. Drill Pinholes: Drill through the scales where marked, ensuring alignment with the tang holes.

Tips:

  • Use a drill press for precise, straight holes.
  • Secure the scales to avoid slipping while drilling.

Step 3: Assemble the Handle

  1. Mix the Epoxy: Follow the epoxy manufacturer’s instructions to mix the adhesive.
  2. Apply Epoxy to the Tang: Spread a thin layer on one side of the tang.
  3. Attach the First Scale: Press one scale firmly onto the tang.
  4. Insert Pins or Bolts: Push the pins or bolts through the holes to secure the scale.
  5. Attach the Second Scale: Apply epoxy to the other side of the tang and press the second scale into place.
  6. Clamp the Assembly: Use clamps to hold the scales and tang together while the epoxy cures.

Tips:

  • Wipe off excess epoxy before it hardens.
  • Allow the epoxy to cure for at least 24 hours for a strong bond.

Step 4: Shape the Handle

  1. Outline Your Design: Draw the desired handle shape on the scales.
  2. Rough Shaping: Use files or a belt sander to shape the handle to your design.
  3. Fine Shaping: Smooth the handle edges with progressively finer sandpaper.
  4. Ensure Ergonomics: Test the handle for comfort during shaping and adjust as needed.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

  1. Polish the Handle: Use fine-grit sandpaper to remove scratches and achieve a smooth finish.
  2. Apply a Finish: Apply a wood oil, wax, or varnish to protect wooden scales. For synthetic materials, polish with a fine compound.
  3. Polish the Blade: Remove any adhesive residue from the blade and give it a final polish.
  4. Sharpen the Blade: If the blade is not pre-sharpened, use a sharpening stone to hone the edge.

Step 6: Test and Maintain Your Knife

  1. Inspect Your Knife: Ensure the handle is secure and the blade is aligned.
  2. Perform a Test Cut: Try simple cutting tasks to verify sharpness and ergonomics.
  3. Knife Maintenance: Clean the blade after each use, oil it periodically, and store it properly to prevent rust.

Optional Customizations

  • Engraving: Add initials or patterns to the blade or handle.
  • Bolsters and Guards: Enhance aesthetics and safety with additional components.
  • Liners: Add colorful spacers between the tang and handle scales for a unique look.
